Behind the counters

Across the ecosystem — from manufacturers and installers to consumers and policymakers —  there is agreement that more and more households are choosing to install better, more affordable, and more efficient electric machines. What’s less clear is how much growth we are seeing. Industry partners and other stakeholders have been successful in tracking the adoption of individual appliances, but to date there has not yet been a comprehensive view at the rate of adoption of all efficient electric machines. Using a combination of market data from the Department of Transportation, the Energy Information Administration, and data providers like Grandview Research and Ohm Analytics, Rewiring America has done just that.

We crunched the numbers for each type of machine — heat pumps for heating and cooling, heat pump water heaters, electric vehicles, rooftop solar, and electric cooking ranges — and we project that by the end of 2025 there will be more than 112 million electric appliances in use. Now, armed with this data and the knowledge of where we are in full adoption of these machines, we can better design a roadmap to get them in more homes over the next twenty years.

BREAK IT DOWN FOR ME

Our projections are based on estimates of the current number of efficient electric machines in use by households as of the end of 2024 and the forecasted increase in 2025. The data sources and assumptions used for our stock estimates and sales projections are detailed in our methodology here.

In the coming weeks and months, we’ll begin sharing our lookback analysis with more details and comparisons. Check back here.
